COLUMBIA (WACH) - The person killed in a wreck that closed part of SC-277 Tuesday has been identified.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says Gary A. Raszewski, 59, of Columbia was driving an SUV on SC-277 near Bull street when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a concrete barrier.

Raszewski was the only person in the SUV when it crashed. He died at the scene from injuries sustained in the collision, according to Watts.

Officers and an unknown number of civilians tried to help Raszewski before law enforcement arrived, according to police.

A spokesperson with the Columbia Police Department says by the time rescue crews arrived, the car was engulfed in flames.

The Columbia Police Department is investigating the crash.
