COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A former Columbia city councilman who served prison time for tax evasion has permanently surrendered his South Carolina law license.

The state Supreme Court on Friday said it had accepted the resignation from E.W. Cromartie.

Columbia's longest serving city councilman was sentenced to a year and a day in prison after pleading guilty in 2010 to tax evasion and structuring bank deposits to avoid federal income reporting requirements. Cromartie admitted failing to pay more than $25,000 in federal income taxes and said he made more than $200,000 in cash deposits and withdrawals just below the IRS minimums for transaction reporting rules.

Cromartie was on the Columbia City Council for more than 25 years. He served nine months in federal prison.
