SUMTER, SC (WACH) - Veterans in Sumter got a well deserved ceremony on Memorial Day.

The annual ceremony was held at the Gen. George Mabry Memorial Park near Shaw Air Force Base, and was highlighted by a speech from Lieutenant General Vincent Brooks. He said the day is about honoring those brave enough to serve the call of duty.

"Our minds turn to those who have gone before us. Those who have served and have since  moved on through their final roll call, to their final resting place," said Brooks.

Monday's emotional event featured a tribute to service men and women who are currently prisoners of war or those who are missing in action. It was capped by the laying of a memorial wreath.

Brooks thanked retired veterans; in particular, Vietnam Vets. He said they did not get the same amount of support when they returned home from war.

"I want you to know that we who currently serve enjoy tremendous support from our fellow citizens. We know that has not always been the case. From us to you Vietnam Veterans, welcome home," said Brooks.

Active duty servicemen like Ninth Air Force Commander Major General Larry Wells said they cannot do it without help from civilians.

"Our nation is very grateful for the service of all veterans. And we are now being recognized by multiple civilian institutions. We appreciate everything our civilian counterparts have done to recognize our service," saod Wells.
