COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced Tuesday a new upgraded community notification system, called the "Sheriff's Alert System."

The new system will aid Sheriff Lott's goal, allowing citizens to receive crime alerts, incidents, safety/weather messages, and events in their community.

Sheriff Lott says its a way to stay connected to the community since a lot of households do not have land lines anymore, and notifications can now come to cell phones.

The Sheriff's Alert System combines digital mapping technology with phone data to contact those in areas targeted by deputies.

People can sign up for free and stay connected on RCSD's website.
