ORANGEBURG (AP) -- South Carolina State University is commemorating the anniversary of a shooting with a panel discussion on the impact the event had on college campuses.

Friday marks 45 years since the event that became known as the Orangeburg massacre. Three S.C. State students were killed on Feb. 8, 1968, after state troopers opened fire on campus on protesters angry about a local bowling alley which was segregated.

The panel discussion is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, while a ceremony honoring the victims is slated for 3 p.m. Jordan Simmons III, who was one of 27 people injured in the shooting, will talk about his memories.

An FBI investigation led to charges against nine troopers, but a jury of 10 whites and two blacks acquitted them.
