CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A Summerville woman has found a rare tape recording of Martin Luther King Jr. among the effects of her father who was a newspaper reporter.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that Laura Crosby's late father, Eugene Sloan, was a reporter for The State newspaper in Columbia.
He recorded King during a speech the civil rights leader gave in Charleston on July 30, 1967.
King gave the 40-minute speech as part of his Poor People's Campaign to draw attention to the plight of the poor. It took place after riots in Detroit and there was concern that there might be violence in Charleston as well. But there was none.
Crosby says she hopes to sell the recording to someone willing to preserve it.
