SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- The University of South Carolina-Upstate is hosting discussions on what humans can learn from the way we treat animals.

Author Carol J. Adams is visiting the Spartanburg school on Thursday to give a lecture entitled "Veganism and the Care Tradition in Feminist Theory." A second lecture, "God-Talk, Compassion and the Sexual Politics of Meat," is scheduled for later in the day and is open to the public.

A book signing will also follow the second lecture.

Clif Flynn of USC Upstate's sociology department says Adams' visit is part of a growing awareness of the importance of how humans relate to animals. A course on animals and spirituality is also being taught at USC Upstate this year.
