ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina State University administrators say enrollment at the school declined nearly 9 percent between the fall and spring semesters.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports (http://bit.ly/YUoby4 ) that Vice President for Finance Eric Eaton says the university has a plan to deal with a potential $5 million shortfall from the enrollment decline.

Eaton says South Carolina State officials will only spend money if it is required or needed to keep students and faculty safe.

The university's enrollment is 3,479 this spring. Eaton says the university's financial situation would be better if it had at least 4,200 students.

Administrators told trustees that the school plans to begin aggressively recruiting new students, especially from technical colleges. They also say they will work harder to retain the people attending the university.
