Columbia, S.C. (WACH) - City leaders have put a temporary hold on issuing new taxi cab licenses.

There are several companies that provide taxi service in the Midlands, from large corporations to smaller independent cab companies.

Stephen English of Blue Ribbon Taxi Corporation says everyone should be held to the same standard.

"We aren't trying to cut anyone off but you need accountability in this industry." said English. "We need something to bring everybody up to a certain standard."

The city wants to conduct a study to see if the number of taxi cabs is adequate for the amount of people who need service in the area.

The study will also look into the amount of taxi cab licenses being issued.

"In the last few years there have a lot of new business license applications." Said, Debbie Kaiser, City Business License Administrator .

The hold is temporary and does not effect those who currently hold a valid taxi license.
