COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A state committee recommends that South Carolina reject requests for more beach groins, walls of rock or wood that are used to trap sand along a beach.

The State newspaper reported the panel voted Tuesday to recommend to lawmakers that they approve rules blocking the beach erosion devices.

The walls trap sand as it washes down the coast, keeping more sand on eroding beaches. But usually, the walls cause more erosion on the other side of the wall, because of the lack of sand flow.

The panel say the groins might be needed near inlets to help boat traffic.

South Carolina has 166 groins from Hilton Head Island to Garden City, just south of Myrtle Beach. Most are in Pawleys Island, Folly Beach, Edisto Beach and Hilton Head Island.
