COLUMBIA (WACH) -- It started as a simple concept…hire actors to put unwitting participants into awkward situations and video tape them, and with the airing of Allen Funt’s Candid Camera, reality television was born.  By the 1950’s, game shows was the craze, where millions of viewers sat in their living rooms, watching people win fabulous prizes!

When home videos became the rage, reality tv followed suit.  Now we fist pump, watch washed up rock stars fall in love, and get excited as season 25 of 7 strangers picked to live in a house.  Let’s not forget the mega success of American Idol, which has jump started the careers of many a talent singer.

In August, viewers will be given the newest way to spend 30 minutes on their couch eating potato chips; a show that will share the world of competitive bearding, called Whisker Wars.  The show, according to their website “follows a devoted group of whisker warriors as they travel the country competing for top bearding honors in preparation for the World Championship Competition in Trondhjem, Norway.”

Other planned shows include Basketball Wives, yet another Kardashian romp, An Idiot Abroad, and of course American Idol will continue to dominate all that is reality TV.

Is there an end?  Is there a show that people won’t watch?  Is there one that is too mundane or too “real?”  We want to know your thoughts.  Leave a comment, or check out our bearded Good Day Columbia crew on our Facebook page.
