COLUMBIA -- A retired USC professor and well known anti-gay activist is denying allegations that he hired a male prostitute.
Dr. George Alan Rekers has been accused by several news outlets of hiring a man from rentboy.com, a site that connects gay escorts with clients.
The Miami New Times claims he was spotted leaving Miami International Airport on April 13, 2010 with a 20-year-old man rented from the site. The latest New Times report also says the escort has stated he gave Rekers nude massages on the 10-day trip to Europe.
WACH Fox News contacted Rekers Wednesday for a statement. He has replied and maintains that the man was hired as a travel companion to help lift luggage after a surgery and not for sexual services.
In his response, he also says he has been advised to seek a defamation attorney.
The Distinguished Professor of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science Emeritus at the USC School of Medicine specializes in the psychological assessment and treatment of sexual disorders according to his university biography that was pulled from the USC website Thursday morning. Rekers retired from the school in 2005.
WACH Fox News has confirmed that Rekers, who is also an ordained Baptist minister, was a member at Columbia's First Baptist Church.
Rekers also co-founded the conservative Family Research Council with Christian activist James Dobson in 1983. The Family Research Council website states the group "believes that homosexual conduct is harmful to the persons who engage in it and to society at large."
Rekers' name has also been removed from the council's website.
Rekers is also the author of "Growing Up Straight: What Families Should Know About Homosexuality," and serves on the board of a national group that argues homosexuality can be "cured" through therapy. Rekers' testimony was also used to successfully defend a legal challenge to a Florida law that bans homosexuals from adopting children.
