COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Chesterfield County Sheriff Sam Parker is charged with misconduct in office.

Prosecutors say Parker used state inmates to work on his home and personal property. In exchange, he allowed the inmates to live outside jail, go shopping and eat out at restaurants.

The State Grand Jury indicted Parker late Tuesday afternoon. He is charged with four counts of misconduct in office and two counts of furnishing contraband to inmates. Each charge carries a sentenced of up to 10 years in prison.

A message left for Parker was not immediately returned. It wasn't known if he had a lawyer.

Parker is the fourth sheriff in South Carolina to face criminal charges in less than three years. Three of them were accused of misusing state inmate labor.
