CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- An Army Corps of Engineer official says while studies for the $300 million deepening of the Charleston Harbor shipping channel are moving ahead, final completion of the project depends on Washington.
U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham and Lt. Col. Ed Chamberlayne of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers met Monday with the board of the South Carolina State Ports Authority.
Chamberlayne says deepening studies are progressing quickly. But he's concerned automatic federal spending cuts could lead to corps furloughs next month, slowing the work.
Graham said construction of the project depends on Congress approving the money at a time when there are no federal earmarks. He plans to introduce a bill providing upward to $100 billion for infrastructure as part of a larger measure dealing with federal spending and the deficit.
