JENKINSVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- The 6-foot-thick concrete foundation for South Carolina's new nuclear plant has been poured in Fairfield County.

South Carolina Electric & Gas Company announced that a crew finished the foundation Monday for the new reactor at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station near Jenkinsville.

The utility says it took more than 51 hours to pour the 7,000 cubic yards of concrete needed for the containment and auxiliary buildings for the nuclear reactor.

SCE&G is building two new reactors at the site. The first is scheduled to open in 2017, with the second reactor planned to begin generating power in 2018.

V.C. Summer currently has one nuclear reactor which began operating three decades ago.
