CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- State Sen. Vincent Sheheen says South Carolina lawmakers should put political ideology aside and allow expansion of Medicaid under the federal health care law to thousands of additional adults.

The Democrat mentioned as a candidate for governor again next year spoke at a news conference at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Sheheen said it doesn't make sense for South Carolina to send its tax dollars to other states to be used for health care. The federal government would pay for the first three years of the expansion and Sheheen says the state should then review what additional costs it would mean to the state then.

Gov. Nikki Haley is opposed. Haley spokesman, Rob Godfrey says Sheheen's position would bust the state budget and do nothing to reduce health costs.
