CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The bishop of some Episcopal churches staying with the national church wants a judge to immediately block the bishop of churches that have left the denomination from using the name of the Diocese of South Carolina.

The request for a preliminary injunction filed in federal court Thursday is the latest development in a dispute among churches in the eastern part of the state.

Attorneys for Bishop Charles vonRosenberg want U.S. District Judge C. Weston Houck to issue the injunction against Bishop Mark Lawrence.

Lawrence and dozens of parishes broke away from the national church in disputes over ordaining gays and other issues.

Parties seeing a preliminary injunction have to show they will likely succeed in a trial and will suffer irreparable harm if it is not granted.
