LANCASTER, S.C. (AP) -- A Lancaster man has been accused of beating a 5-year-old girl to death.
Twenty-seven-year-old Phillip Bryan Gleason has been charged with homicide by child abuse in the death of the girl for whom he was supposed to be providing care.
Soren Victoria Chilson was found unresponsive early Tuesday in the home Gleason shared with the girl's mother. Paramedics took the girl to Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, where she died.
An arrest warrant says the girl died from a blow to the head.
Lancaster County sheriff's deputies say the girl's mother was at work.
Gleason is a Winthrop University student in his second semester studying political science. It was not clear if he has an attorney.
