COLUMBIA (WACH) - Senior citizens in the Palmetto State feel their health care for the poor and disabled is a top priority.

AARP released results of a new survey showing more than half of seniors surveyed said Medicaid is very important. Medicaid is a state sponsored program assting poor and disabled citizens with their medical care.  Lately, Medicaid expansion has been a hot topic in the Palmetto State as lawmakers look for ways to expand the program.  Bill Lindsey works with mentally ill citizens.

"It  helps those folks who are less fortunate, who are below the 138 percent of the Federal poverty level,  It just really opens it up for some people to get treatment," said Lindsey.

AARP said 25 states including South Carolina are seeking federal funding for their Medicaid programs.

Gov. Nikki Haley has repeatedly refused to expand Medicaid in the state.
