ORANGEBURG, SC (WACH) - Orangeburg Sheriff's Office officials arrested a man on Monday who is accused of severely beating a woman in Springfield on Sunday afternoon after being released from jail.

Orangeburg county Sheriff Ravenell says officers were called to a home in Springfield around 1:30 p.m. Sunday to find a woman lying on the ground with visible trauma to her face.

According to Ravenell, Michael Patterson, 40, was released from jail on Sunday on a previous charge of assault and battery against the victim from December 2012. He is accused of going straight to the victim's home to collect personal belongings.

Patterson was arrested in Livingston on Monday on a charge of attempted murder.

Investigators say the victim and Patterson had an argument which led to Patterson striking the woman in the face, dragging her into the yard, and punching her. During the beating, Patterson is accused of picking up a piece of wood and striking the woman while her children watched.

Ravenell says the two people who brought Patterson to the home drove away before authorities arrived.

The incident report states the woman was flown to a local hospital and suffers from broken bones to the face.

“The assault this victim suffered, a second time by the hands of Patterson, is senseless. And for him to beat her so severely in front of their children shows what kind of man he really is," said Ravenell.

The investigation is ongoing.
