HAMPTON COUNTY (WACH) - A former Hampton County deputy is accused of inappropriately touching a male student while employed as a school resource officer.

State Law Enforcement Division spokesman Thom Berry says Larry Heyward, 52, was arrested in January and is charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor and misconduct in office.

According to Berry, the arrest stems from a SLED investigation requested by the Hampton County Sheriff's Department.

The arrest warrant states on or about September 2011, Heyward is accused of touching a male student in a sexual manner while on duty as a school resource officer. The victim was under 16 years of age.

Heyward was booked at the Hampton County Detention Center. As of Thursday night, he had been released.
