A medical student who survived a genocidal attack on a hospital in Burundi is bringing the story of his escape from the Hutu-Tutsi conflict to the University of South Carolina.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A medical student who survived a genocidal attack on a hospital in Burundi is bringing the story of his escape from the Hutu-Tutsi conflict to the University of South Carolina.
The organization Carolina Leadership Initiative is hosting Deo Niyizonkiza, who is speaking about his escape and life after attending medical school in America. Since that time, he has opened a clinic in Burundi that has served more than 55,000 people regardless of their ability to pay.
Monday's presentation is at 7 p.m. in Drayton Hall on the Columbia university campus. Organization director Kirk Randazzo says the doctor's talk is the second in a series designed to bring leaders to campus who can share their experiences and help students learn how to make a positive influence.
