COLUMBIA (WACH) - State health officials and retailers are looking at ways to reduce obesity by encouraging shoppers to make healthy choices.

Tuesday, Department of Health and Environmental control officials along with State Retail Association members talked about ways that grocery stores can educate and influence their customers to make better food choices.

They highlighted one way Walmart is leading the way, by removing all candy from the checkout area and replacing it with healthy snacks.

DHEC director Catherine Templeton spoke about ways to make people in South Carolina more active.

"We've also talked to [stores] about what they are doing to incentivize their employees. Walgreens has a walking program, and if you walk a mile, you get more points on your bonus card - so it's like you're earning money by being healthy," said Templeton.

The speakers also discussed recommendations that will be sent to the General Assembly on how to revise state restaurant regulations.
