CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Magnetic levitation, high speed rail and monorails are among suggested solutions to ease the gridlock along the Interstate 26 corridor leading into Charleston.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports a $1 million study of mass transit options for the corridor is under way and should be complete next year. On many days it takes an hour to drive the 20 miles between Charleston to Summerville.
The study by federal, state and local agencies will be compiled after public hearings.
Suggestions for easing gridlock include magnetic levitation in which trains that hover above tracks are propelled by magnetic force. They could reach speeds of 300 mph. The technology is already used in China and Japan.
Light rail, monorails and designated travel lanes for buses are among other suggestions.
