LEXINGTOn, SC (WACH) -- The cold temperatures and rain did not stop hundreds of people to jump into Lake Murray Saturday morning.

Several people took a Polar Plunge to help raise money, and awareness, for the South Carolina Special Olympics. Organizers say the drive gained about $20,000 for children participating in this years games; which will be held throughout the year.

The event got much of its money from law enforcement across the state. There was also a costume contest and lots of food despite the miserable weather.

Cpl. Mike Still with the state Transport Police is the Volunteer Director for the Special Olympics. He said Saturday was a great example of how strong the public support is.

"We want to raise money for Special Olympics, but we also want the public to know that these athletes are very special," Still said. "They have very special talents. And so we want that awareness. We figured that jumping into water will get some awareness. People are going to think we are crazy. But it shows how committed we are to give Special Olympics athletes the same opportunities we have."

WACH Fox's Katie Williams also participated in the plunge.
