COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A Richland County man is appealing the 5-year prison sentence he was given for the death of another man in a scuffle after a 2010 college football game.
Twenty-seven-year-old Curtis Simms was sentenced last week to five years in prison for the death of a man after the Alabama-South Carolina football game.
A Richland County jury convicted Simms of aggravated breach of peace in the death of 20-year-old Martin Gasque.
Authorities say Simms is an Alabama fan who had a chance encounter with Gasque after the Gamecocks' win. Testimony indicated that Simms punched Gasque, who fell under a friend's pickup truck and died.
One of Simms' attorneys, Greg Harris, said he is seeking a new trial.
