SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- A Spartanburg woman has been killed as she tried to cross some railroad tracks and was hit by a train.

Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger says 61-year-old Deborah McBeth died at the scene Tuesday afternoon.

Spartanburg police Capt. Art Littlejohn says the crossing lights and arms were working properly when McBeth tried to cross the tracks. She was hit by a westbound Norfolk Southern train.

Littlejohn says it's possible McBeth was looking at an eastbound train and did not notice the one headed west that struck her.

McBeth is the third person killed in a train-related accident in Spartanburg County this year.
