WILLIAMSTON, S.C. (AP) -- Anderson County sheriff's deputies say a Williamston man has been shot to death after a standoff with officers.

Sheriff John Skipper says the shooting happened shortly before 8 p.m. Monday at a home just outside Williamston.

Deputies had gone to the home after neighbors called 911 and asked them to check on Charles Eugene Porter II.

Skipper says the deputies went to the home to try to persuade Porter not to harm himself. The sheriff says Porter had a gun near him and he grabbed it and appeared to be planning to fire at the officers. Two of them shot him.

The officers are on administrative leave while the State Law Enforcement Division investigates. Their names were not released.
