SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Spartanburg County election officials say they would like schools to be closed for voting in local races as a security measure.
Spartanburg County elections director Henry Laye has asked the seven school boards in the county to consider setting a calendar for the coming school year that would have students out of classes for elections for school board and municipal offices.
Many schools are used as poll locations and classes already are closed for statewide elections. But classes traditionally have been held on local election days.
Laye says he's discussed the idea with school superintendents for some time, but it has become more urgent after the school shooting in Connecticut.
Spartanburg, Landrum, Pacolet and Central Pacolet all have municipal elections Nov. 5, in addition to school board elections.
