GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say they are questioning the son of a 78-year-old woman whose body was found in a trash bin behind her South Carolina home.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said an autopsy conducted Monday found Marjorie Knuckles was strangled and had several other injuries indicating she was beaten before she was killed. The coroner called it one of the most heinous cases he has investigated.

Investigators say Knuckles' family discovered she was missing Saturday, but her body wasn't found until Sunday, when someone took some garbage to the trash bin. Knuckles lived with her 95-year-old homebound mother.

Police say they are still investigating the killing and haven't charged anyone in the case.
