LEXINGTON, SC (WACH) -- A local elementary school got some national recognition Tuesday.

Oak Grove Elementary School was recently awarded the National Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence in Washington D.C. Officials, faculty, and students celebrated the honor with a visit from Congressman Joe Wilson.

The school was one of five in the state and 23 in the country to receive the prestigious award.

Wilson said the recognition proved that education is a top priority in Lexington.

"Every level here is positive, promoting quality education," Wilson said. "To win the National Blue Ribbon Award, it is great competition across the country. It is a reflection of the extraordinary professional educators that are here."

Lexington Senator Katrina Shealy also issued a plaque commemorating the honor.
