COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Almost three months after last November's election snafu, the group fighting for a new election is taking their case to court.
The Citizens for a Better Government in Richland County announced on Tuesday that their plea for a new election will be taken up by the South Carolina Supreme Court.
Spokesman Michael Letts said he has filed a protest challenging the Richland County Election results; including the sales tax referendum.
Letts says the board ignored a state stature requiring one voting machine for every 250 registered voters, which made for long wait lines and kept thousands of people from casting their ballots.
Attorneys for the Richland County Council said the statute is not mandatory, but Letts disagreed.
"This is the worst debacle we have had in Richland County," Letts said. "What are we doing to solve it? How are we getting the truth out? We demand accountability. We demand open disclosure. And we demand that the county quit fighting the citizens."
Both sides have until February 15 to have their briefings ready. Letts said according to state law, election matters take first priority at the state Supreme Court. He said he expects a quick process.
