CHAPIN, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina high school teacher fired after stomping on the American flag wants his job back.

The State newspaper reports Friday that former Chapin High School teacher is asking the Lexington-Richland District 5 school board to overturn his firing. Officials say the seven-member board will decide Monday when to hear the appeal, which Scott Compton wants to hold in private.

Compton was let go after he talked glowingly about the U.S. and the importance of embracing freedom while stomping on an American flag in his classroom last month.

His attorney has said Compton's action wasn't intended to be disrespectful and was an effort to promote discussion in three honors English classes on how the nation is much more than its symbols.
