COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Republican State Senator Lee Bright is proposing a bill that would make an elective course on gun safety available for high school students.

The "South Carolina Gun Safety Program" would offer the state's high school students training on how to safely use guns.

"I think this fear of guns is something that we have to address as a society, because it's not the guns that create the problem," said Brice.

The bill will give School Districts the option to create the courses, which would be held off campus at a shooting range.

Bright says he got the idea from the days when students could join a rifle team or learn about shooting during a school day.
