COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The amnesty period has run out for anyone owning a gambling machine in Richland County.

Sheriff Leon Lott says he will tell his deputies to begin charging anyone found with video gambling, Internet sweepstakes or similar machines on Monday.

Lott gave owners five days to get rid of the machines after the South Carolina Senate passed a bill leaving no ambiguity that the machines were illegal last week.

State law banned gambling machines based on chance in 2000, but some machine owners have argued that their games are based on skill.
