COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The recent gun control controversy is not sitting well with several South Carolinians.

As part of National Gun Appreciation Day, pro-gun organizations hosted a peaceful rally at the Statehouse Saturday. About 700 residents from around the state came out to show their support; emphasizing the importance of the second amendment; the right to bear arms.

Anti-gun supporters say President Obama's plan of universal background checks and ban on assault rifles do not infringe on the amendment.

But David Petersen,South Carolina Coordinator for Guns Across America, said he disagrees.

"I am all for having Resource Officers in schools," Petersen said. "Let's keep our kids safe. However, when it comes to the second amendment, shall not be infringed means exactly that. It is about the American people's ability to defend themselves against tyranny; whether it is from domestic or foreign sources."

Petersen said the Palmetto State is one of 48 states to host a rally.
