GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina sheriff is appearing in court after authorities say he took kickbacks on repairs for county vehicles.

Abbeville Sheriff Charles Goodwin also is accused of using a state inmate to do work for himself and his friends.

Goodwin will appear Friday in court in Greenville. He's charged with one count of misconduct in office and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the misdemeanor.

Goodwin became sheriff in 1988.

The details of the kickback scheme are not included in the indictment. But prosecutors say Goodwin had county vehicles serviced at a body shop from 1998 to 2011 and took a share of the money the county was paying for the repairs.

The indictment also did not spell out the work Goodwin had the inmate perform.
