CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The filing period has opened for those who want to run for South Carolina's vacant 1st Congressional District seat.
Filing began at noon on Friday and at least one Democrat has announced he's getting into the race.
Charleston businessman Martin Skelly says he will make the run for the seat left vacant when Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Rep. Tim Scott to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant when Jim DeMint resigned.
The district runs along the state's south coast from the Charleston area to Hilton Head Island.
At least 10 Republicans are planning to run in the GOP primary, including former Gov. Mark Sanford.
The filing period closes at noon Jan. 28 with primaries set for March 19. The special election is set for May 7.
