Police say baby dies in downtown Columbia

COLUMBIA (WACH)- An infant dies in the downtown Columbia area and officials are trying to find out how and why.

According to Columbia Police, officers responded to a Slighs Avenue home after receiving a call from the Richland County Coroner’s Office. at approximately 8:30 a.m. in reference to an infant.

Police did not give the name or infant's age.

The infant was taken by EMS to a local hospital and was later pronounced dead.

Police spokesperson Jennifer Timmons said police and the coroner's office are investigating to see if any criminal activity was involved in the child's death.
