COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina taxpayers have two more months to sign up for a state-paid credit monitoring service following a massive security breach at the Revenue Department.
Gov. Nikki Haley announced Friday that the deadline for signing up for Experian's ProtectMyID service has been extended to March 31.
A computer hacker stole the tax filings of 3.8 million adults and 700,000 businesses in mid-September. Stolen data included unencrypted bank account numbers and Social Security numbers of adults, plus their 1.9 million dependents.
The state is paying Experian $12 million for one year of credit monitoring and dedicated call center operators. Nearly 1 million people have signed up so far.
Notices to affected taxpayers began going out last week.
