COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - Richland County's Legislative Delegation has passed a resolution asking Richland County Elections Director Lillian McBride to resign.

The resolution says, in part, "WHEREAS it is clear that a multitude of failures at the Richland County Elections and Voter Registration office disenfranchised many voters in Richland County on November 6, 2012."

"BE IT RESOLVED THAT WE, the undersigned members of the Richland County Legislative Delegation, call on Richland County and Voter Registration Director Lillian McBride to resign immediately."

Rep. James  Smith (D)-Richland supports the resolution. He told WACH Fox News "We needed the Delegation with one voice and put out an official statement.  The people of Richland county, their confidence is justifiably shattered and the county needs to respond appropriately."

Fellow Richland County Democrat Leon Howard did not sign the resolution. Howard said, "I understand the resolution that's going around is not binding.  It can't make anyone do anything."

The resolution gave McBride a deadline of 4:00 Friday to resign, which she did not.  The resolution calls for the Richland County Board of Elections to call for a meeting by December 28 to remove McBride from office.

Last month, Attorney General Alan Wilson said the delegation did not have the authority to fire McBride.  The delegation does choose the members of the Board of Elections.  The Board of Elections in turn hires the executive director.
