COLUMBIA (WACH)—The Columbia Police Department is reporting that a suspicious person report lead to an accident and a suspect in custody.
According to Columbia Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons, just before midnight, officers were called to the parking lot of the La Quinta Inn on East Exchange near Garners Ferry Road for a report of a “suspicious person.”
When the officers arrived, they tried to stop the car, which “took off at a high rate of speed.” Timmons said that the suspect’s car hit a tree on Old Hopkins Road, and he fled on foot.
After closing off the area, the CPD K-9 team was called in, and located the suspect, who is identified as 34-year-old Brandon Reshard Burden.
Burden is charged with reckless driving, failure to stop for blue lights, and driving under suspension.
The incident report states Burden's top speed was over 100 miles per hour and he "disregarded traffic control devices."
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is also investigating, as is standard in an accident involving law enforcement.
