YORK, S.C. (AP) -- A Fort Mill man has been sentenced to 40 years for shooting his ex-girlfriend to death and wounding her son.

The Herald of Rock Hill reports that 40-year-old James Enrico Diago was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to charges including murder and attempted murder.

Diago was arrested in January after 34-year-old Jackie Craine of Fort Mill was shot at her apartment and died at a hospital. Authorities say Craine called 911 as Diago opened her car door and shot her.

Craine's teenage son was in the car with her and was hurt in the shooting. Authorities say Diago later called 911 and confessed.

His attorneys said Diago had undiagnosed mental issues and came from a hard life of foster care and abuse suffered as a child.
