SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities are investigating the death of a 104-year-old woman they say had been neglected by her son.

Police found Demetra Leventis at a Spartanburg home Tuesday. Authorities said she was lying in her own feces and had fist-sized bed sores filled with maggots.

A home health nurse said the woman's son told her to leave when she asked him for help cleaning up his mother.

Leventis was hospitalized for an infection, and her 63-year-old son, George Leventis, was arrested and charged with neglect. On Friday, the county coroner's office said the mother had died and that an autopsy was scheduled for later in the day.

It wasn't known if George Leventis had an attorney.
