ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) -- A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for killing a baby sitter who surprised him as he broke into an Orangeburg home.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports (http://bit.ly/Z3yPGK ) Cleophus Edwards was found guilty of murder Thursday.

Authorities say Edwards thought no one was at the house in February 2011 when he broke into the home. But Carolynne Hanton was watching four children, ranging from infants to toddlers.

Prosecutors say Hanton likely was stabbed after confronting Edwards. None of the children in the home were injured.

Authorities say Edwards was arrested after a probation agent at his home noticed a computer that was stolen from the house where Hanton was babysitting.
