CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- An audit of the Patriots Point Development Authority finds that, without state or federal funds, the maritime museum on Charleston Harbor won't be able to maintain its fleet.
The Legislative Audit Council audit released Thursday was requested three years ago by then-Senate President Pro Tempore Glenn McConnell. It also suggests Patriots Point designate a commercial development director and improve its marketing and fundraising.
In a response, Authority Executive Director Mac Burdette is pleased the report found no allegations of wasteful spending and said the authority is in the second year of a five-year business plan.
He disagrees the museum won't be able to maintain its ships, including the USS Yorktown. He says the money will be found through fundraising, leasing authority land and an increase in ticket sales and prices.
