COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A representative from the company that monitors credit for South Carolinians affected by a data breach says its services are worth about $150 million.
Mark Kapczynski told a Senate panel probing the state's cyber security that more than 932,000 people have enrolled in a program that includes a free year of credit monitoring.
The special subcommittee is investigating ways to increase the state's cyber security in the wake of a massive hacking of millions of taxpayers' personal data.
The filings of 6.4 million residents and businesses were stolen when an international hacker accessed Department of Revenue servers earlier this year. South Carolina has contracted to pay Experian $12 million to provide a year's worth of free monitoring for people who sign up.
