STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Two North Carolina school districts and one in South Carolina are among 16 nationwide to land federal funds in the first time competitive federal Race to the Top grants have gone directly to local school leaders.

The U.S. Education Department said Tuesday that Iredell-Statesville Schools will get nearly $20 million over four years while Guilford County Schools will get $30 million for education reforms that focus on individual student learning. Guilford County's is the state's third-largest district, and the money will buy computer tablets for every middle-school student to work daily on personalized courses that track each child's learning.

The Charleston County School District in South Carolina will get $19.4 million to help the second half of its 10-year effort to develop a comprehensive personalized learning experience for each student.
