COLUMBIA (WACH) - A group of University of South Carolina graduate students presented their history presentations about the old asylum on Bull Street in Columbia Monday afternoon.
 
Art and public history students in Lydia Brandt's architectural history class  spent the fall semester meticulously researching and documenting the buildings and history of the Bull Street campus, where the South Carolina State Hospital operated on the 178-acre campus at the corner of Bull an Elmwood for more than 100 years.

The graduate and undergraduate students presented their findings and discussed the past, present and future of the Bull Street campus  Monday USC's McMaster College.

Topics addressed architectural style and construction of buildings; changing attitudes toward mental illness over time; farming, foodservice, faith and burial grounds; and the history of race and gender and mental illness.

Elizabeth Fagin presented a history of how the Facility served African American patients from the Reconstruction era of the late 1860's until the late 1960's.
