CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Charleston area residents are divided on plans to extend Interstate 526 to Johns Island and James Island.

Charleston County Council held a public meeting on the proposal Tuesday, with several dozen people speaking for or against the highway.

Joanna Horres told council members that most residents don't want the highway. Horres says there should be better alternatives that cost less money.

The project is expected to cost more than $500 million.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley says the new highway is needed. He says most in the community favor the extension.

Riley says the city and the county should work together to fund the project. He says the road will help people get to work and other places they need to go.

No vote was taken at the meeting.
